Cappadocia, Türkiye
We celebrated our birthdays in Cappadocia—something we’ve made a tradition of for the last four years.
No laptops, no work. Just fully present.
I didn’t know what to expect. But seeing Göreme, Cappadocia covered in snow? Surreal.
The landscapes are already famous—the carved cave dwellings, the towering rock formations.
And in winter, the usual sun-soaked beige terrain was softened under a layer of white, and the air felt crisp.
It was the perfect setting to step away from daily routines.
From delicious food to sunrise moments that felt straight out of a dream—this was one of those trips that stays with you.

Let’s get into it…
Foods I obsessed over
1. Muhammara at Seten Restaurant is rich, smoky, and perfectly spiced. Made with roasted red peppers, walnuts, and olive oil, it had just the right hint of heat.
2. Apple tea at Oze Coffee Shop is cozy, sweet, tart, and almost cider-like. Served hot in a tulip glass, it was the perfect way to warm up after a snowy walk through town.
3. Traditional Turkish food, Köftesi at Göreme Restaurant —juicy, tender, and full of flavor. Served with green salad and bulgur (a staple in Türkiye). Hearty and satisfying.
Magical places & moments
Turkish tea and sunrise
It was a crisp 3°C morning. Snow dusted the tops of the fairy chimneys, and the valley stretched endlessly in every direction.
We set up our tripod over the frozen water of the hot tub next to us, capturing the moment with Turkish tea warming our hands.
There were no hot air balloons that morning, but the view—it was its own kind of perfect.
Friendly restaurateur
We stopped into Göreme Restaurant for takeout—our first time there.
One side of the space was laid out with carpets and low round tables, traditional and cozy.
The owner offered us tea while we waited. We said yes—expecting the usual. But it was apple tea. Fragrant, sweet, and bold.
Walk to the outdoor museum
We walked to the Open Air Museum expecting a dull roadside trek—but it turned out to be beautiful.
Snow-covered fields, towering rock formations. At one point, a group of horses tore across the landscape in full gallop. Parts of the path were lined with tiled walkways and old lampposts.
Honestly, you don’t need to enter the museum to be awed—just walking there was its own kind of magic.
Best areas to stay
Göreme – Central & Scenic
The most popular base in Cappadocia, known for its fairy chimneys, cave hotels, and access to tours and trails. Great for first-timers who want walkability and easy access to restaurants, shops, and the Open-Air Museum.
Ürgüp – Upscale & Quiet
A slightly more refined, less touristy town with boutique stays, wineries, and historic mansions. Ideal if you want a peaceful retreat with a touch of luxury, but still close to all the sights.
Uçhisar – Elevated & Panoramic
Perched on a hill with sweeping views of the valleys and hot air balloons. More relaxed and residential. Perfect for travelers looking for postcard-worthy views and quieter evenings.
